'Love and Money' Symposium March 28 to Consider Growing Power, Influence of Global Movement in Social Enterpreneurship

The University of Baltimore's Entrepreneurial Opportunity Center will host a day-long symposium on the social entrepreneur and the enormous potential of the global social enterprise movement on Friday, March 28 in the William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center, 11 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The event, "Love and Money: The What, Why and How of the Social Entrepreneur" will begin at 9 a.m., following a continental breakfast in the center’s atrium. All symposium events will take place in the adjacent M. Scot Kaufman Auditorium. Attendance details for this event are listed below.

"Love and Money" is intended to provide both a broad perspective and a sense of the reach of the growing social entrepreneurship movement, which has evolved from grassroots agencies affecting change in incremental steps to whole companies and industries—indeed, it could be argued that these concerns now represent a "fourth sector" of the global economy (the other three being public, private, and traditional non-profits and non-governmental organizations)—which collectively are bringing about a fundamental change in the social order akin to the civil rights movement.

Fourth-sector entrepreneurs are leveraging the potential to realize lasting change on a worldwide scale, addressing millennia-old issues like hunger, poverty and social inequality in ways never before seen in history. Their "for benefit" model—prompted by a social purpose, self-sustaining, and creating and distributing products and services that improve quality of life, add jobs and stimulate the economy—calls for market generated profits that are then turned back to be invested to advance a social mission. These entrepreneurs are determined to put all of their energies into resolving entrenched social issues while reducing dependence on traditional grant and gift funding methods.         

Non-profit and community leaders, grant makers, economic developers, and the business community will find value in this three-track symposium, featuring national opinion makers such as Dennis R. Young, the Bernard B. and Eugenia A. Ramsey Professor of Private Enterprise in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Young's opening address, "Where We Are Now: The State of the Union in Social Entrepreneurship" will set the tone for the day.

Break-out sessions led by local experts will offer a close focus on a number of social entrepreneur issues, such as "Force Multipliers: The Combined Power of Market and Mission"; "Finance and Funding for a Double Bottom Line"; and "Web Strategies for Social Entrepreneurs."

A lunchtime plenary session, "For Profit and for Purpose: The Benefit Corporation," will feature Victor Mallet, director of recruiting for B-Lab. B-Lab is a non-profit organization that exists to encourage the growth of the "benefit corporation," a new organizational model that uses private enterprise for public benefit. Since last June, more than 80 companies, including Seventh Generation and Method Home Products, have become B-corporations. Mallet will be joined by the co-founders and owners of two leading lights in this realm—Brandon White of Baltimore-based Lateral Line, an outdoor clothing company that makes fishing apparel; and Scott Wheeler of StrategyArts, a strategy and brand marketing firm specializing in sustainable businesses.

The symposium's closing speaker will be Robert L.E. Egger, founder and president of DC Central Kitchen, Inc., where unemployed men and women learn marketable culinary skills while foods donated by restaurants, hotels and caterers are converted into balanced meals. Since opening in 1989, DC Central Kitchen has distributed 17.4 million meals and helped more than 605 people gain full-time employment. Egger serves as chair of the DC Mayor's Commission on Nutrition. His closing speech is entitled "The Charge."

Through its work in entrepreneurial activities and its founding of the Entrepreneurial Opportunity Center, the University of Baltimore has staked out a strong position in supporting and facilitating the growth of this movement in both scholarly and practical areas. These sessions will provide both the novice and the experienced social entrepreneur with new tools and new insights into how they can move forward.
