Maryland Chesapeake Bay Fishing Reports and Ocean City Offshore and Inshore Fishing Reports Updated March 26, 2010

Maryland Light Tackle Fishing Report Chespaeake Bay in Fishing Clothing Outdoor Clothing Flyfishing Clothing Shirt company Lateral Line Saltwater Fishing Blog Fishing ReportsFinally, welcome to the 2010 weekly Maryland fishing reports. Spring is here in Maryland, well almost other then this little cold snap we are having. Anglers are out and about catching perch in the upper tributaries, to striped bass catch and release fishing in the main stem of the Chesapeake. If you are a white perch angler this is probably going to be the height of the run, so get your rods and get out and do some fishing. Hot areas have been the Choptank around Red Bridges working south to Greensboro, the Upper Chester River up in and around Millington and on the western shore in the upper Patuxent River. (pictured is Mark light tackle fishing with some of his custom Shore Tackle light tackle rods in the middle Chesapeake Bay this past week)

Striped bass are making their way up the Chesapeake. I was in the Virginia Beach area last week and saw diving birds and stripers breaking at the mouth. Reports from friends said the stripers have been coming in waves and reports from the commercial anglers further up the Virginia portion of the bay are reporting good catches of striped bass. Some have already arrived and you can expect more as we move into April. Maryland’s catch and keep season is closed until April, catch and release is open, please use catch and release best practices when handling and releasing striped bass.

Maryland Fishing Reports

Upper Maryland Chesapeake Bay Fishing Reports
The Susquehanna Flats catch and release striped bass season is open. Reports from that area have been spotty, with the best success coming from anglers using bait (cut herring). Please remember if you use bait you are required to use circle hooks. A few big stripers were caught yesterday (Thursday) while those doing light tackle and fly fishing said the action was generally slow. In my experience fishing the flats, where I used to spend as many as twenty five plus days a year fishing, the fishing really does not get decent until the Continue Reading »

International Coastal Clean Up sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy that will occur on the banks of the Choptank River

flier_choptank_clean_upThe 2009 International Coastal Clean Up sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy THE OCEAN CONSERVANCY that will occur on the banks of the Choptank River on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 9am to Noon.  Rain date is the following Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009  9am to Noon.

Volunteers should meet at Sailwinds Park-Visitor’s Center.  All volunteers receive a free 2009 Coastal Clean Up T-Shirt thanks to The Ocean Conservancy and Delmarva Power.  If you register with the Maryland Coordinator, you give me a tally for shirt order.  Go here. Please help me get the word out to your friends, family, co-workers, customers, patrons, etc.

This is a wonderful experience for young minds too!  Our youth sees the true meaning of “litterbug” and makes a life long choice to not be one.  Also, to pick up any trash or debris they see in the future; even if it is not their own.  So bring the children in your life…you’re giving them an amazing gift.

In addition, the kids can log onto The Ocean Conservancy website and follow the national and international debris collection data.  As well as, follow the rate of global ocean clean up. (Click picture to the left for a full size version. It will open in a new window)

Sixth Annual Jamaica Bay Kayak Fishing Fundraising Tournament on May 16th

Kayak Fishing Tournament, Kayak Saltwater Fly FishingOn May 16th, Captain Kayak will be sponsoring the Sixth Annual Jamaica Bay Kayak Fishing Fundraising Tournament ( Hundreds of contestants will be attending the multi-day event in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge – all within the shadow of the Manhattan skyline.

The event is not only a kayak fishing competition but a gathering to bring like minded anglers together to camp, kayak and explore the beauty of Jamaica Bay.  Each participant is granted launching access and camping privileges to Floyd Bennett Field Park from May 14th through May 17th. In addition to catching fish and having fun, the primary focus of the tournament is to raise funds for a worthwhile non-profit group. Casting for Recovery provides no-cost fly fishing retreats at locations around the United States, specifically designed for women who have or have had breast cancer. This group provides an opportunity for women, whose lives have been profoundly affected by the disease, to gather in beautiful, natural settings and learn fly-fishing, “a sport for life.” Just as importantly, this tournament offers an opportunity to meet new friends and have fun. Casting for Recovery is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that relies solely on donations to provide fly-fishing retreats to hundreds of breast cancer survivors every year. Your contribution is tax-deductible as permitted by law, and will help us expand our capacity to meet the ever-growing demand for our services.

Over $10,000 in prizes will be donated and there are several ways to win these prizes at the event. Catching the largest fish with any method, the largest fish caught with a fly rod, or Continue Reading »
