NEW ENGLAND COUNCIL SEEKS INPUT ON HERRING MANAGEMENT: Tell Them to Put Forage First!

Published by at 1:34 pm under Fisheries Conservation Talk

I received this email from Ken Hinman who is a friend and runs the National Coalition of Marine Conservation. Thought it would be appropriate given the herring and Shad posts I have had on here recently. Every vote counts!

Last October we called on our Email Action Network members to write to the New England Fishery Management Council (Council) and ask them to initiate an Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan (FMP) amendment to protect a forage base for predators and to correct deficiencies in the way the industrial herring fishery is regulated. Thanks to you, the amendment is now underway, and the Council is seeking public input on what management measures to include. Tell the New England Council and the National Marine Fisheries Service that it’s time to put Forage First in herring management!

See NCMC’s web site for instructions on sending comments and to view a sample letter outlining our recommendations.
